Berchtold Castle

What is the history behind the site?

Written records place a noble seat at Vidovice as early as 1388, when the estate belonged to a family that took the name "of Vidovice," first recorded through a certain Václav of Vidovice. His sons Beneš, Jakub and Jan later held the property, but that original residence disappeared sometime in the second half of the 15th century, most likely amid the unrest of the Hussite wars.

The castle visitors see today has nothing to do with that earlier building. It was constructed in 1877 as an independent estate split off from the neighboring Chlum property. On 24 December 1877, the newly built residence, together with its land and a brickworks, was given as a wedding gift to Eleonora, daughter of the Brozorád family, and Rudolf Kainz. Ownership changed hands in 1894, when Jan and Marie Milner bought the estate, and again a year later when it passed to Otakar Berchtold and his wife Kateřina — the family whose name the castle still carries. A later renovation even uncovered Otakar Berchtold's coat of arms built into the structure.

How was the castle used in the 20th century?

After nationalization, the Czechoslovak army took over the property and used it as part of Prague's air-defense infrastructure. It wasn't until 2005, when new owners acquired the estate, that the building underwent a full reconstruction: a new wing was added, the park was expanded, a sports complex was built, and the site was opened to the public for the first time.
