Bavorská stráň

Bavorov, Czechia

About this place

Bavorská stráň is a small but botanically significant nature reserve east of the town of Bavorov, in the Strakonice district of South Bohemia, Czech Republic. It lies in the valley of the Blanice River, on the western slope of the Svobodná hill, at an elevation of roughly 418 to 436 metres above sea level. Despite its modest size, the site is a good example of how much biological diversity a single unassuming hillside can hold.

Why was this area protected?

Bavorská stráň has held the status of a natural monument (přírodní památka) since 1996. Protection was declared by a decision of the Strakonice District Office on 5 March 1996 and took effect on 1 July of the same year. The main reason was the presence of exceptionally species-rich meadows growing on alder-derived soil, belonging to the Molinion meadow association — a habitat type that has become increasingly rare across Central Europe due to land drainage and the intensification of meadow management.

What is there to see?

Alongside the damp Molinion meadows, the reserve also preserves other meadow plant communities as well as small, fragmented patches of oak-hornbeam forest belonging to the Carpinion association — woodland dominated by hornbeam and oak, typical of richer, moderately moist sites in this part of the Czech Republic.

It is precisely this mix of habitats packed into a small area that allows several rare and legally protected plant species to survive here. Among them are the fringed pink (Dianthus superbus), with its delicately fringed petals; rosemary-leaved willow (Salix rosmarinifolia); Siberian iris (Iris sibirica), known for its distinctive blue-violet flowers; and clustered bellflower (Campanula glomerata). The presence of these species points to the good ecological condition of the meadow habitats and the moist conditions characteristic of the Blanice valley.

Who is this place for?

Bavorská stráň will appeal more to visitors interested in botany and nature conservation than to those looking for dramatic scenery — there is no lookout point or tourist infrastructure here, only a patch of semi-natural landscape of the kind that was once typical of the entire Blanice valley. The best time to visit is spring and early summer, when the meadows are in full bloom and rare plant species are easiest to spot.

Because of its protected status, visitors should treat the site with care. As with any natural monument, restrictions apply here to shield the fragile meadow habitats from excessive human pressure.
