U Piláta

Vitějovice, Czechia

About this place

U Piláta is a small but ecologically valuable forest reserve in the Prachatice District of southern Bohemia, a few kilometers from the village of Vitějovice. It's a place that won't draw crowds, but rewards visitors looking for a quiet encounter with nature in the Pošumaví region, on the edge of the Šumava foothills.

What exactly is U Piláta?

It is a natural monument (přírodní památka) covering 8.02 hectares, declared on May 24, 1989, by decision of the former District National Committee of Prachatice (document no. 72/89). The site is managed by the Nature and Landscape Protection Agency of the Czech Republic (AOPK ČR). It sits on a steep slope in the valley of the Zlatý potok stream, about 2.5 km south of Vitějovice and 2 km northeast of the village of Nebahov.

Why was this area protected?

The reason for protection is a vital, natural beech stand growing on scree, on a steep valley slope. These conditions favor the development of species-rich flowering beech forest (the Eu-Fagenion association), with its characteristic plant composition and abundant bird life. The geological base consists of granulite and biotite granulite, which in places emerges at the surface as small rocky outcrops and scree fields. Water draining from the site flows into the Zlatý potok, which in turn joins the Blanice river.

What kind of vegetation grows here?

The entire area of the natural monument is covered by a stand of flower-rich beech forest, dominated by European beech (Fagus sylvatica). A closer breakdown of the habitat types shows that oak-beech forest covers 76.43% of the territory (5.61 ha), fresh fir-beech forest accounts for 21.53% (1.58 ha), acidic fir-beech forest makes up 0.27% (0.02 ha), and the remaining 1.77% (0.13 ha) is stunted fir-beech forest. This mosaic of habitats means that, despite its modest size, the site is floristically diverse.

Who is this place for?

U Piláta suits nature lovers and anyone looking for a peaceful walk through old-growth beech woodland, particularly travelers who enjoy discovering lesser-known corners of Czech nature away from the main tourist trails. The steep valley slope and the natural, undisturbed character of the forest make it an interesting short excursion for anyone exploring the area around Prachatice and the Blanice valley.

How do you get to U Piláta?

The reserve lies south of Vitějovice, toward the village of Nebahov, in the scenic valley of the Zlatý potok. Given the terrain — a steep slope — it's worth planning the visit with sturdy footwear, especially after rain.
