The municipality lies roughly 30–40 km from the city of León, making it an easy day trip by car. Local roads follow the Luna river valley, linking the twelve villages that make up the municipality: Canales-La Magdalena, Garaño, Irián, Carrizal de Luna, Villaceid, Villayuste, Quintanilla, Lago de Omaña, Santovenia de San Marcos, Camposalinas, Bobia and Soto y Amío. The landscape is dominated by oak-covered mountains and a fertile valley running alongside the Luna river. From the villages of Irián and Carrizal de Luna, sitting at around 1,160 metres, wide views open up over the Cantabrian Mountains. Within the municipality's boundaries rises Peña Ubiña, one of the range's most recognisable peaks at 2,417 metres, a magnet for hikers and mountain lovers.
The whole area forms part of the Omaña and Luna Valleys Biosphere Reserve, designated by UNESCO in 2005 in recognition of its natural and landscape value.

Walkers can pick from several marked trails. The Pico de San Pedro route is a circular path of nearly 9 km starting from the village of Garaño. A shorter option is "Los Caminos de la Trashumancia," also circular, covering about 6 km along historic tracks once used by shepherds moving livestock between seasonal pastures.
