Archeologické muzeum Šatlava is a compact but rewarding museum tucked into the heart of Česká Lípa, housed in what used to be the town's jail. The name "Šatlava" is an old Czech word for a municipal lock-up, and the building genuinely served that purpose for centuries — the earliest record of a jail on this spot dates to 1572, and the structure is documented in roughly its current form as early as 1785. After a thorough reconstruction, it reopened to the public in 2011 as a branch of the Regional Museum of Česká Lípa.

When should you visit?

The museum operates seasonally, from April to the end of October, open 9:00–12:00 and 13:00–17:00 (last admission at 11:30 and 16:30 respectively). From May to September the exhibits are open daily except Mondays; outside the main season, visits are only possible on Saturdays and Sundays. It's worth double-checking the schedule before travelling, especially if you're visiting near the start or end of the season.

Full admission costs 60 CZK, but visitors who have already been to the main building of the Regional Museum in Česká Lípa and kept their ticket can get in for a reduced 30 CZK.
