Archaeological Museum of Galera

The Archaeological Museum of Galera is a small but rewarding museum in the town of Galera, in the province of Granada, Andalusia. Housed in the former convent of the Cristo Rey nuns on Calle San Marcos, it displays more than four thousand years of local history, from the Copper Age through to the medieval period.

The collection is arranged to walk visitors through successive waves of settlement in the area. The earliest pieces date to the Chalcolithic (Copper Age), followed by rooms dedicated to the El Argar culture and the Bronze Age, and then to the Iberians, Romans, Visigoths and Muslims who all left traces of their presence around Galera. The highlight is a mummified body discovered in 2002 in burial 121 at the Castellón Alto site, a Bronze Age settlement within the municipality of Galera. The remains survived in an unusually good state of preservation, with surviving soft tissue and hair — a rare find in Iberian archaeology and one of the most significant discoveries of its kind in Spain.

Galera sits in the eastern part of Granada province, in the Huéscar–Puebla de Don Fadrique area, close to the border with Murcia. The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday. From September to May, hours are 11:00–13:00 and 17:00–19:00; in the summer months (June to August) the afternoon slot shifts to 19:00–21:00, letting visitors avoid the midday heat. Admission costs €2.
