What building houses the museum?
The collection is displayed inside the former Hospital Real (Royal Hospital), an 18th-century building at Calle Carrera del Carmen 27, right in the centre of Vélez-Rubio. The town council restored this historic structure specifically to turn it into a museum, so visitors walk through galleries set inside a piece of period architecture rather than a purpose-built modern hall.
How did the collection come together?
The story starts in the 1950s, when Professor Miguel Guirao Gea began assembling archaeological, palaeontological and ethnological material connected to the district. His family carried the work forward, and on 22 November 1991 Miguel Guirao Pérez, together with relatives, formally donated the entire collection to the Vélez-Rubio town council. In return, the council committed to creating a public venue to display it, which is how the present-day museum came into being. In 1997 the institution was officially entered in the Andalusian Register of Museums.

The core is archaeological material recovered mainly from sites across Los Vélez and the wider southeastern Spanish region, tracing successive periods of settlement in this part of Almería. One unexpected addition is a set of stone tools brought from the Sahara, which gives the exhibition an extra point of comparison beyond Spain itself.
