About this place
Arbeid Adelt is a historic windmill of the stellingmolen type (a gallery mill with a rotating cap, known in Dutch as a bovenkruier), standing in the village of Weelde, part of the municipality of Ravels, in Belgium's Antwerp province. The mill's name — literally "labour ennobles" — echoes a traditional guild motto once popular among millwrights in this part of Flanders.
When was the mill built?
The structure was erected in 1850 by millwright Van Himbergen, commissioned by the Bax-Pelkmans family. From the start it served a dual purpose: grinding grain and pressing oil from oilseeds, a common combination for rural mills of that era, which often bundled several processing functions under one roof.
How did its function change over time?
In 1906 a fire destroyed part of the oil-pressing equipment. After rebuilding, the oil-pressing function was abandoned and the mill continued to operate purely as a grain mill. A second blow came on 11 September 1921, when a severe storm tore off the cap and sails — a common fate for mills of this design when caught unprepared against the wind.
The real turning point came in 1936, when a diesel engine was installed in an adjacent building. From that point on, professional wind-powered milling was discontinued in favour of mechanical power — a fate shared by most windmills across Western Europe during the interwar and postwar decades.
What happened to the mill in the second half of the 20th century?
The mill's fortunes as a heritage site changed with a major restoration in 1966, carried out under the direction of J. Schellekens, which restored its original appearance and structure. Further conservation work followed in 1993–1994 and again in 1996, this time undertaken by the Caers brothers from Retie.
Since 1989 the mill has been owned by the municipality of Ravels, which has provided it with stable institutional care and funding for ongoing maintenance.
What does the mill look like today?
In 2008 the mill's gallery was renewed by the firm Thomaes Molenbouw from Beveren-Roeselare. During this work, the vertical braces were replaced with angled ones, restoring the historically original look of the supporting structure. That same year saw the founding of the Molenkring "Arbeid Adelt" association, dedicated to caring for the mill and promoting its history, alongside the launch of the Leader project "Molen Arbeid Adelt," which supports local rural-heritage initiatives.
The mill has long been a notable landmark in Weelde and the wider municipality of Ravels — in recent years it celebrated its 175th anniversary, marked together with local residents amid music and sunny weather.
