Creating the terraced garden on the steep slope above town was no small task: rocks were blasted with dynamite and soil for the plantings was hauled in by horse-drawn carts. The result was a series of semi-circular terraces that stayed open to the public for fifteen years, from 1926 to 1941. After its founder left Opatija, the garden was closed and remained inaccessible for decades.
