All Saints church

Dolní Přím, Czechia

About this place

All Saints Church is a Baroque place of worship in Probluz, a hamlet that forms part of the Dolní Přím municipality in the Hradec Králové region. Its tall tower can be seen from far across the surrounding countryside, and its walls still carry marks left by one of nineteenth-century Europe's bloodiest battles.

When was the church built, and by whom?

The originally parish church was built between 1690 and 1691. It was commissioned by the superior of the Jesuits, with construction carried out by master builder K. Labuška. The Baroque structure, with its single nave and rectangular presbytery, is typical of sacred architecture built in the region around the turn of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

What does the building look like inside and out?

The church has a single-nave layout, with a rectangular nave divided by pillars fitted with clustered pilasters. A rectangular presbytery adjoins it to the east, while a rectangular sacristy sits on the north side. The most distinctive feature is the slender, square tower rising on the building's west side. Inside, the nave ceiling is covered by a barrel vault spanning two bays.

What mark did the Battle of Königgrätz leave on the church?

On 3 July 1866, during the Battle of Königgrätz (also known as the Battle of Hradec Králové or Sadová) - one of the decisive clashes of the Austro-Prussian War - the tower's original cupola was damaged. Two cannonballs remain embedded in the tower's facade to this day, silent witnesses to the fighting that took place here. When the damaged tower was later repaired, it was rebuilt at a lower height than before.

What surrounds the church today?

An old, disused cemetery surrounds the church. Monuments commemorating soldiers who fell during the Battle of Königgrätz have been preserved there, standing as quiet reminders of the events of 1866 that left a lasting mark on this place.

What is the church's status today?

The church currently functions as a filial church belonging to the parish of Nechanice. It is therefore not an independent parish in its own right, but remains an active place of worship under the care of the neighboring parish community.

Where exactly is the church located?

The church stands in Probluz, part of the Dolní Přím municipality in the Hradec Králové district, at coordinates 50.2456 N, 15.7157 E.
