Aljezur Táctil Museu Municipal

Aljezur, Portugal

About this place

The Aljezur Municipal Museum occupies the town's old 19th-century Town Hall building on Largo 5 de Outubro, right in the heart of Aljezur. Small in footprint but dense in content, it condenses more than ten thousand years of human presence in this corner of the Algarve into three distinct exhibition spaces.

What's inside the museum?

The collection is organized into three sections: an archaeology nucleus, an ethnography nucleus, and a dedicated Islamic hall known as the Andalusian Legacy Room. The archaeology section displays a wide-ranging set of objects documenting millennia of settlement in the region, tracing the area's occupation from its earliest traces through successive historical periods.

Why does the museum have a room dedicated to Islamic heritage?

The Islamic presence was central to the founding of Aljezur itself, which is why the museum set aside a specific space for this chapter of the town's past. The Andalusian Legacy Room brings together artefacts from the Islamic period, chiefly ceramics and metal objects. Among the most notable pieces is a collection of ceramics recovered during archaeological excavations at the Castle of Aljezur — a fortress built by the Arabs in the 10th century that formed part of the defensive network of Silves during the 12th and 13th centuries. The Castle of Aljezur was, in fact, the last Islamic stronghold in the Algarve to fall to the Christians, conquered in 1249 under King Afonso III.

What does the ethnography section cover?

The third strand of the exhibition turns to the region's ethnography: everyday objects, tools, and household items connected to the traditional life of Aljezur's inhabitants. This lets visitors move from deep archaeological time into the more recent history of the local community within the same visit.

How much does admission cost?

An individual ticket costs €2.20. Organized groups of ten or more pay €1.10 per person. Children up to 12 years old, people with disabilities, students, and guides or teachers accompanying groups are admitted free of charge.

Where is the museum and how can visitors get in touch?

The museum is located at Largo 5 de Outubro, 8670-088 Aljezur. Visitors can reach the Association for the Defense of the Historical and Archaeological Heritage of Aljezur at +351 282991011, or the Aljezur Town Hall directly at +351 282990010, and by email at [email protected].

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth pairing the museum with a visit to the castle? Yes — many of the pieces in the Andalusian Legacy Room come directly from excavations carried out at the castle site, so the two visits naturally complement each other and together give a fuller picture of the town's Islamic history.

How long does a visit take? Given the museum's compact size, a thorough look at all three sections typically takes around an hour.

Is the museum suitable for children? Yes, especially since children up to 12 are admitted free, and the archaeology displays tend to be visually engaging thanks to the variety of objects on show.
