What was the Pont du Gard built for?
The Pont du Gard formed one link in a much longer aqueduct that carried water roughly 50 kilometres from springs near Uzès to the Roman colony of Nemausus, present-day Nîmes. Across that entire distance the ground dropped by only 17 metres, meaning Roman surveyors had to hold an extremely shallow, constant gradient for the water channel even as the route crossed hills and valleys. Where the aqueduct met the deep gorge cut by the Gardon, the channel had to be carried high above the riverbed — hence the towering, three-level bridge that still stands today.
When and how was it constructed?
Construction is dated to 26–16 BC, during the reign of Augustus, and the project is credited to Marcus Agrippa, the emperor's close associate who oversaw major infrastructure works across Roman Gaul. Roman builders assembled the structure from tightly fitted stone blocks laid dry, without binding mortar — a technique that relied on the sheer precision of the cutting and the weight of the stone itself to hold the arches in place. Mortar was used only in the foundations of the piers standing directly in the river current, where the waterlogged ground demanded extra reinforcement.
What does the structure look like?
The bridge rises in three stacked tiers of arches, each level narrower than the one below it and carrying the load upward to the next. Along the very top ran the water channel itself, covered with stone slabs to limit evaporation and keep the water clean. Maintaining the minimal, uniform slope required across the full 50-kilometre aqueduct meant the entire structure had to be set with remarkable surveying precision, a testament to the engineering skill behind the project.
What survives today?
The Pont du Gard has come down through two thousand years in near-original condition, an unusual feat for a Roman structure of this scale. In the 18th century, a road bridge was added alongside the ancient aqueduct, allowing vehicles and pedestrians to cross without placing extra load on the Roman structure itself. That addition is largely why the original aqueduct escaped the wear of everyday traffic and kept its ancient form intact. In 1985, UNESCO added the Pont du Gard to its World Heritage List in recognition of its exceptional value as a work of Roman engineering and architecture.
