Abadía del Sacromonte

Abadía del Sacromonte is a historic abbey complex in Granada, built on the Valparaíso hill in the Sacromonte neighbourhood. Together with the Alhambra and Granada's cathedral, it forms one of the three key sites for understanding the city's layered history.

How did the abbey come about?

The story begins on 18 March 1588, when a parchment written in three languages, a canvas, an image of the Virgin Mary, and bones attributed to the Apostle Saint James were discovered in the Torre Turpiana. Seven years later, in 1595, excavations of old Roman kilns on the hill uncovered the remains of the martyr Saint Cecilius, patron saint of Granada and, according to tradition, a disciple of Saint James. Archbishop Pedro de Castro considered the finds significant enough to order an abbey built on the spot, and construction of the complex began in the 17th century, continuing into the following one.
