Why was a lighthouse built on this hill?

Monte da Guía has held strategic value for centuries: from its summit, sentries could watch the mouth of the bay and guard the coastline against raiders and pirates. Remains of an ancient hillfort (castro) survive on the slope, evidence that the site was inhabited and defended long before any lighthouse stood there. When was the first light lit?

Beyond guiding trading ships, it also helped vessels find their way to the newly established quarantine station on the island of San Simón, which brought a sharp rise in shipping traffic to the port.

The lighthouse standing today, designed by engineer Rafael de la Cerda, replaced the original structure and was lit in 1916. The tower rises 21 metres, with its light positioned 37 metres above sea level and a range of about 15 nautical miles. A Guía is regarded as the first lighthouse built in Galicia after the Tower of Hercules in A Coruña, the oldest working lighthouse in the world.
