Drzewica Castle

Drzewica, Poland

About this place

Drzewica Castle is a Gothic-Renaissance castle in Drzewica, Poland, built between 1527 and 1535 by the archbishop of Gniezno, Maciej Drzewicki. Set on the edge of town by the Drzewiczka River, it was once protected by moats separated by a bulwark, and today it survives as a well-preserved ruin. It is a good stop for a short visit and a bit of sightseeing.

  • The castle’s regular rectangular plan is still easy to read on site, which makes it a clear example of early 16th-century residential fortification.
  • Its defensive layout is marked by four square corner towers, a detail that helps explain how the fortress was originally organized and protected.
  • Because the building burned down in 1814 and was never later altered, it remains one of Poland’s best-preserved residences from the first part of the sixteenth century.

For a visit, it is worth wearing comfortable shoes and checking the weather, since you will be exploring a ruin rather than an indoor museum. This is a good choice for travelers interested in historic architecture, quiet sightseeing, and places with a strong sense of original form.
