Vranov Castle

Who built the castle, and when?

Vranov was founded in 1425 by Heník of Wartenberg (Valdštejn) as a Gothic stronghold guarding traffic through the Jizera valley. Through the rest of the fifteenth century it stayed in the hands of the Wartenberg family, who took full advantage of the site: the sheer rock faces and the commanding view over the river made the castle difficult to approach and even harder to besiege.

Why did the castle fall into ruin?

By the early sixteenth century the stronghold had lost its military purpose and was abandoned. For roughly the next three hundred years it simply decayed — walls and towers left unattended gradually merged back into the rock they were built on.

How did the ruin become known as "Pantheon"?

The turning point came in 1802, when the Malá Skála estate, including the Vranov ruins, was bought by the entrepreneur František Zachariáš Römisch. He had a proper path laid out to the castle and a lookout point built high above the Jizera. Around the ruins and in their immediate surroundings he placed romantic monuments and memorial mounds dedicated to notable historical figures. It was under his ownership that the old hillfort earned a second name — Pantheon — still used today alongside the original Vranov.
