How old is Herálec Chateau?

The settlement's roots go back to the 13th century. Herálec itself is first recorded in a 1226 document issued by Pope Honorius III, at a time when the village belonged to the Želiv monastery. Ownership changed hands early on: at the start of the 14th century the estate passed to Henry of Rožmberk, who traded it with the Bishop of Prague, Jan IV of Dražice. For more than 150 years afterward it belonged to the Trčka family of Lípa, one of the most powerful noble houses in Bohemia at the time.

Who gave the chateau its current shape?

In 1601 the last Trčka owner, Kryštof Jaroslav Trčka of Lípa, sold the estate to Kryštof Karel of Roupov. Over the following decades Roupov turned the older structure into a three-wing, single-storey building with round towers — a layout still recognisable in the building today. The estate changed hands again in 1623, when it was bought by Philip Adam, Count of Solms, a general serving under Albrecht von Wallenstein. After his death, in 1708, the property passed to Michal Achác, a free lord von Kirchner, under whom a chapel was added on the first floor.

When did the chateau receive its neo-Gothic look?

In the early 19th century the estate belonged to Countess Therese Trautmannsdorff of Nádasdy; from 1838 it was run by her son, Jan Nepomuk of Trauttmannsdorff. Under his direction the building was remodelled in neo-Gothic style, adding the pointed details and decorative elements that now sit alongside the older Renaissance core of the structure.

How did a derelict chateau become a five-star hotel?

For decades the building stood neglected before finding a new owner. The turning point came after 2004, when the Kasper family acquired the estate and carried out a full restoration. The result is Chateau Herálec Boutique Hotel & Spa by L'Occitane, a luxury property registered as a Czech national cultural monument.
