Domousnice Chateau is a Baroque residence at the heart of the village of Domousnice, in the Mladá Boleslav district of central Bohemia, surrounded by a park and former farm buildings. What is the history behind the chateau?

The earliest written mention of a fortified seat on this site dates back to 1290. By 1378 the estate belonged to Beneš Bílý of Dětenice, and around 1400 a Gothic fortress (tvrz) was built here, first documented in 1405 as the property of Karel Haras of Bosyně. The building visitors see today took shape around 1730, when the older seat was rebuilt into a Baroque residence. Its present-day appearance, however, is largely the result of construction work carried out between 1917 and 1926.

In the summer of 1911 the chateau was visited by the famous Czech opera singer Ema Destinová, an episode still fondly recalled in local history. A later owner, the Czech politician Jindřich Maštálka, a deputy in both the Prague and Austrian parliaments, carried out some of the last major renovations during those very years, 1917–1926. During the socialist era the chateau served as a recreation center for the Union of the Disabled. Today it is privately owned.

The chateau is a two-wing building: the south wing rises two stories high, while the adjoining north wing has only one. The whole structure is topped with a distinctive mansard roof, typical of Baroque residential architecture of the period. Next to the main building lie extensive L-shaped cellars, reached by steep stairs that make access somewhat difficult. According to local tradition, these cellars are remnants of a brewery that once operated on the estate.

The chateau is set within a park, and in recent years the property has also become home to a working winery — an unusual pairing of history and local production that gives visitors an extra reason to linger in Domousnice rather than simply pass through.
