About this place
Vústra is a small but ecologically valuable nature monument in the Semily district of the Czech Republic, situated roughly 1.3 km north of the village of Olešnice and about the same distance east of Všeň. The protected area covers 2.24 hectares at an elevation of 296 to 310 meters above sea level, and it received its protected status in 1995.
What does the Vústra nature monument protect?
At the heart of the site lies a small pond of the same name, surrounded by a boggy meadow. This wetland biotope is the actual subject of protection: the designation exists to preserve suitable conditions for specially protected plant and animal species that depend on this kind of habitat.
What plants grow on the boggy meadow?
Historically, the meadow was home to round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) and marsh grass of Parnassus (Parnassia palustris), both species typical of nutrient-poor, waterlogged ground. Today the vegetation is dominated by buttercup-family communities, most notably globeflower (Trollius altissimus), recognizable by its round, bright yellow blooms, and broad-leaved marsh orchid (Dactylorhiza majalis). This shift in plant composition over time is a common pattern in wetland habitats, shaped both by water levels and by how the land has been managed.
What animals live at Vústra?
The nature monument is home to 32 species of vertebrates. Among the birds that can be spotted here are the grey heron and the common kingfisher, both closely tied to aquatic environments, for which the pond and its surroundings offer good foraging conditions. Their presence is a useful indicator of the healthy ecological state of this small pond-and-wetland system.
Can visitors explore Vústra?
Yes — the site is freely accessible to the public. A marked hiking trail runs along its perimeter, allowing visitors to walk around the entire area without stepping directly onto the protected meadow or disturbing the species that live there. This setup makes it possible to combine hiking with the protection of a sensitive habitat.
