Vítkův kámen

Svatý Tomáš, Czechia

About this place

Vítkův kámen (also called Vítkův hrádek) is a Gothic castle ruin perched on a hilltop above the hamlet of Svatý Tomáš, on the right bank of the Lipno reservoir in the Český Krumlov district. It holds the title of the highest-situated castle in the Czech Republic, standing over a thousand meters above sea level just a few kilometers from Přední Výtoň, close to the Austrian border.

What can you actually see at Vítkův kámen?

Surviving remains include stretches of the outer walls and a central tower, which is in the best condition of anything left standing. Inside the tower a small café now operates, and a wooden staircase leads up to a viewing gallery at the top. From there you get open views over the Šumava hills and the Lipno reservoir below — the main reward for the climb up the hill.

What is the history behind the ruin?

The castle was built by the Vítkovci family, with the first reliable written record dating to 1347, although unconfirmed theories place its origins as early as before 1277. In 1302 it passed to the Rosenberg (Rožmberk) family, who held it until the 17th century. It served as a border stronghold and an administrative center for the surrounding estate. Since 1958 the ruin has been protected as a cultural monument.

How do you get to Vítkův kámen from Svatý Tomáš?

Svatý Tomáš is the small settlement sitting at the foot of the hill the castle crowns, and it's the usual starting point for the walk up. The path climbs through forest and doesn't require special gear, though sturdy shoes help on the uneven ground. The whole area sits within the Šumava range, right above the Lipno reservoir, which makes it a popular stop for both hikers and cyclists exploring the region.

Why is this ruin worth the detour?

Beyond the history and the architecture, the draw here is the view — few spots in this part of Czechia let you take in both the Lipno reservoir and the Šumava ridgeline from such a height. The visit combines a short but genuinely uphill walk with a payoff at the top, plus the option to rest at the café tucked inside the historic tower.
