Vinice

Pardubice, Czechia

About this place

Vinice is a historic city park in Pardubice, Czech Republic, stretching along the right bank of the Chrudimka river next to the local hospital. It's a favourite spot among residents for a riverside walk, and its story stretches back nearly five centuries.

Where does the name Vinice come from?

The park takes its name from a vineyard established here in 1523 by Vojtěch of Pernštejn, then owner of Pardubice. The land was split into five plots and leased out to townspeople, but growing grapes at this latitude never proved very profitable, and the vineyard had disappeared by the Thirty Years' War at the latest. The name stuck anyway — "Vinice" simply means "vineyard" in Czech.

How did a vineyard turn into a park?

The site's next chapter began in the mid-19th century. A wooden building went up in 1843 and was soon licensed to serve drinks, effectively becoming a tavern. The real transformation came at the turn of the 20th century: a public competition for the best landscaping design was held in 1903, with a first prize of 200 crowns and a second of 100, and the tavern itself was expanded with a music pavilion. The park layout was carried out between 1903 and 1908, and this is when Vinice took shape as a proper city park.

What happened to the park afterwards?

Over the following decades the park lost some of its area as the neighbouring hospital expanded. A new redevelopment concept was drawn up in a 1973 study and gradually implemented between 1975 and 1979. The park underwent another major overhaul in 2001-2002, refreshing its paths and greenery to modern standards.

Is Vinice a protected area?

Yes — Vinice is registered as a natural monument in the Pardubice Region, recognising the value of its mature tree stock and the park layout preserved since the early 1900s.

What can visitors see there?

The main draw is the park's layout itself: walking paths running along the Chrudimka river bank beneath old trees planted as part of the early-20th-century redesign. It's valued mostly for its calm, riverside setting — a good spot for a short stroll or a rest in the shade, away from the bustle of central Pardubice.
