Vieux pont de Brives

Vieux pont de Brives (Old Bridge of Brives) is the picturesque ruin of a medieval crossing over the Loire river in Brives-Charensac, right next to Le Puy-en-Velay in the Haute-Loire department. Today it serves as a pedestrian walkway and stands as one of the oldest surviving engineering structures in the region.

How old is this bridge?

The structure likely dates back to the 14th century, although it was built on the site of a much older crossing — possibly even a Gallic one, about which no reliable information survives. It was once known as "pont de la Chartreuse" and served as the main link on the route between Le Puy-en-Velay and Lyon.

The Loire could be violent at this spot, and the bridge was repeatedly swept away by floods. During the Middle Ages it was patched up with temporary wooden decking, which is why it carried the 13th-century name "pont plancher" (plank bridge) for a time.

Why has only part of the bridge survived?

When a new bridge was built in the 18th century — today's pont Monseigneur de Galard, standing only about 50 meters away — the old bridge lost its role as a functioning crossing. Half of the structure was destroyed at that point, and the rest gradually fell into ruin.

Five arches of the original bridge remain standing today. Together they form a narrow pedestrian walkway roughly 136 meters long and 2.80 meters wide, which visitors can cross on foot while taking in the stonework and views of the river.

What is there to see on site?

Besides the arches themselves, two former toll houses (maisons de péage) still stand on either side of the crossing — a reminder of the era when travelers paid to cross the river here. The whole structure, together with these two buildings, was listed as a French historic monument (monument historique) by decree on 16 September 1949.

Walking across the old bridge offers a different perspective on Brives-Charensac than the modern road provides — the stone arches and the calm flow of the Loire create an atmosphere quite removed from the bustle of nearby Le Puy-en-Velay.
