Velké Hoštice Castle sits inside a small park on the edge of the village of Velké Hoštice, just a few kilometres east of Opava in Czech Silesia.

Count Ignác Dominik Chorynský z Ledské, who had inherited the estate, chose to rebuild from scratch, and construction of a new, late-Baroque castle began in 1754.

Under Count Chorynský the castle went through its liveliest era. Between 1768 and 1778 it regularly hosted theatrical performances, lavish dance balls, and numerous musical academies, all supported by the castle's own resident orchestra. Among the guests who visited was Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf, a composer ranked among the most respected of his generation and a contemporary of Mozart. For a couple of decades, this made Velké Hoštice one of the more significant hubs of social and artistic life in Silesia.

How has the building's appearance changed over time?

The original Baroque structure was laid out in a T-shaped plan. Over time its architecture was simplified and reworked in a Classicist style, and around 1840 a single-storey rear wing was added. That renovation is largely responsible for the appearance visitors encounter today — more restrained and symmetrical than the original Baroque design.
