Velké divadlo

Plzeň, Czechia

About this place

Velké divadlo (the Great Theatre) is the main stage of the Josef Kajetán Tyl Theatre in Plzeň and one of the most striking theatre buildings in the Czech Republic. Standing in the heart of the city, it has been the focal point of the region's cultural life for more than a century.

When was the Velké divadlo building constructed?

The current building was erected between 1897 and 1902 to a design by architect Antonín Balšánek, in the neo-Renaissance style typical of grand European theatre buildings from the turn of the 20th century. A building permit was issued in January 1899, and the theatre had its ceremonial opening in September 1902. The rich artistic decoration of the interior and facade was created by well-known Czech artists of the era, including sculptor Ladislav Šaloun and painter Augustin Němejc, whose work gave the building the character of a truly representative public monument.

What was Plzeň's theatre history before Velké divadlo was built?

Theatrical tradition in Plzeň dates back to the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, though the earliest performances were staged in German. The first documented Czech-language performance in the city took place in 1818. Plzeň gained its own dedicated theatre building in 1832, designed by architect Lorenzo Sacchetti and located at the corner of what is now Riegrova Street and the Sady Pětatřicátníků park. The first performance in that building took place on 12 November 1832, and the first Czech-language performance followed on 18 January 1835. The city's rapid growth and the demand for a larger, modern stage eventually led to the decision to build the far more spacious and representative venue that became Velké divadlo.

Has the building undergone major renovation?

Yes — between 1981 and 1985 the building underwent an extensive reconstruction led by architect Pavel Němeček. The work aimed to restore the technical condition of the structure and preserve its historical character while adapting the backstage facilities to modern theatrical requirements.

What is Velké divadlo used for today?

Today, Velké divadlo serves as the main and largest stage of the Josef Kajetán Tyl Theatre (Divadlo Josefa Kajetána Tyla), one of the oldest and most important theatre companies in the Czech Republic, based in Plzeň. The stage hosts opera, operetta, ballet, and drama productions, and the building itself remains one of the city's most recognisable architectural landmarks.
