Veliš Castle

Veliš is a ruined hilltop castle standing above the village of the same name, in the municipality of Podhradí, in the Jičín district, right in the heart of the Bohemian Paradise. Its scattered walls crown a basalt hill and give visitors one of the finest panoramic views over Jičín and the surrounding countryside.

Who built the castle and who owned it?

The castle was founded at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, most likely on the initiative of King Wenceslas II, with the first written record dating back to 1316. Over the following centuries it changed hands many times: owners included John of Luxembourg, the House of Vartenberk, Jiří of Poděbrady, and later Albrecht of Wallenstein and the Schlick family. The Schlicks left such a strong mark on the area that a mausoleum belonging to their family still stands near the village today.

Why is the castle in ruins today?

Veliš was one of the most important castles in eastern Bohemia, dominating the entire Jičín basin as part of a chain of strongholds guarding an old trade route. It was never taken by force — and that very fact sealed its fate. By imperial order the castle was demolished in 1658 (some sources cite 1659) precisely so that it could never be used as a stronghold by an enemy. The final blow, however, came later, with basalt quarrying at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in a quarry that had already existed at the foot of the hill since the early 17th century.

What remains to see on site?

Only fragments of the walls, remnants of towers and the western palace survive, fused with the basalt bedrock of the hill. The heart of the original complex was a large tower with a saddle roof and battlements, flanked on the west and east by palace wings, each closed off by a smaller tower; the eastern one was connected to the castle chapel. Today the paths leading up to the ruins are only loosely marked, and the terraced shape of the southern summit still hints at the vanished buildings that once stood there.
