About this place
Velichov is a small village and municipality in the Karlovy Vary District, within the Karlovy Vary Region of the Czech Republic, home to roughly 500 residents. Despite its modest size, the settlement carries a surprisingly layered past, largely thanks to its local chateau, which passed through several owners and architectural transformations over the centuries.
Where is Velichov located?
The village sits along the banks of a small stream, the Petrovský potok, in a quiet rural stretch of the Karlovy Vary Region. The surrounding landscape is typical of western Bohemia — gentle hills, farmland, and scattered small settlements set apart from the busier tourist routes, which has allowed Velichov to keep its unpolished, provincial character.
What is the history of Velichov chateau?
The oldest and most notable structure in the municipality is the local chateau, whose origins trace back to a medieval fortified manor house. The first written record of it dates to 1528, when it was leased by Burian Šlik, a member of a prominent Bohemian noble family. Earlier still, at the start of the 16th century, a late-Gothic moated stronghold had been built on the right bank of the Petrovský stream, replacing an even older fortification on the same site.
A turning point came in 1747, when the estate was purchased by Johann Franz Hessler, an imperial councilor and mining entrepreneur. He commissioned the conversion of the old fortified house into a late-Baroque chateau, with the work completed by 1755. The building underwent another major transformation under Josef Löschner, a well-known Karlovy Vary physician and spa entrepreneur, who began a pseudo-Classicist reconstruction in 1870.
In the 20th century, the chateau's fate became tied to the Czernin family. Count Eugen Czernin bought the estate in 1924 and, eleven years later, opened a forestry and horticultural school with a boarding house on the grounds. The outbreak of the Second World War ended this educational venture — the school was shut down, and the building was converted into a children's convalescent home. After the war, on 1 October 1945, the property was confiscated from Countess Josefina Czerninová. Three years later the chateau became an orphanage for Greek children, and from 1954 onward it operated as a standard children's home.
What is notable about the chateau today?
The chateau in Velichov is now protected as a cultural monument. Its architecture reflects several historical layers — from its Renaissance and Baroque foundations to the pseudo-Classicist alterations of the 19th century — making it an interesting example of the layered building history found throughout the Karlovy Vary Region.
The village of Velichov itself remains primarily a quiet agricultural settlement without a developed tourist infrastructure. Its main appeal lies precisely in this authentic, low-key character, combined with its proximity to the well-known spa town of Karlovy Vary.
