About this place
V Krátkých is a small nature reserve of just 6.1 hectares, tucked southwest of the village of Vápenice in the Uherské Hradiště district, within the White Carpathians. Despite its modest size, the reserve is remarkably rich in plant diversity. It stretches along the valley of the Hrnčarov stream, at the foot of Mikulčín hill, and encompasses a mosaic of flower-rich meadows wrapped around two small ponds.
What is there to see?
The reserve combines three interlinked habitats within a very compact area: drier meadows on the valley slope, wet meadows along the valley floor, and the immediate surroundings of the two ponds. This variety of microhabitats is exactly why such a small plot supports such a high concentration of rare plant species. The drier grassland patches host species typical of warmth-loving, unfertilized flower meadows, including orchids such as the military orchid and the gladiolus (sword lily) — both reliable indicators of long-term, low-intervention meadow management. They share the slope with other rare and protected perennials characteristic of the calcareous and sub-montane grasslands of the White Carpathians.
Closer to the ponds and the stream, where the ground stays consistently moist, conditions favor plants adapted to wet meadows and marshy fringes, including orchid species that prefer damp habitats. The presence of the two ponds adds a further layer of habitat diversity, making the reserve valuable not only for its flora but also for insects associated with wetland meadows and standing water.
Why was this area protected?
The reserve was established primarily to safeguard rare and threatened plant species, above all orchids, whose survival here reflects decades of extensive, low-input meadow management — mowing without fertilization. This traditional practice has preserved a level of species richness that has become increasingly rare across Central Europe, where such meadows are threatened both by agricultural intensification and, paradoxically, by total abandonment of mowing, which allows scrub and coarse grasses to crowd out delicate meadow flora.
Where is V Krátkých located?
The reserve lies in the landscape of the White Carpathians, near the village of Vápenice, within the Uherské Hradiště district of the Zlín Region. Its approximate coordinates are 48.959°N, 17.8234°E. The site forms part of the broader network of valleys and hills surrounding Mikulčín, a landscape typical of this part of the White Carpathians — gently rolling terrain dotted with pockets of meadow and pasture enclosed by forest.
