About this place
The Utxesa reservoir (Pantà d'Utxesa) is an artificial body of water located in the Segrià region, in the province of Lleida, Catalonia. It spans three municipalities — Torres de Segre, Sarroca de Lleida, and Aitona — making it a landmark shared across the area rather than confined to a single town, even though it's most commonly associated with Torres de Segre.
What makes this reservoir unusual?
Unlike most Catalan reservoirs, Utxesa was not built on a river at all. It sits midway along the route of the Serós canal, within the hydrographic basin of the Segre river. In practice, this means it isn't a dam reservoir in the usual sense — it's a regulating reservoir, storing water diverted from the Segre so it can be managed and distributed in a controlled way.
How and why was it built?
The reservoir was built in record time and became operational in 1914, following construction work that began in 1912. Three earthen dams were used, their inner faces lined with stone to prevent erosion — the first two measuring 388 and 270 meters in length, and roughly 18 and 14 meters in height. The whole project, of which the reservoir was the regulating component, pursued two goals: generating electric power and irrigating dryland crops across the region. For Lleida, this amounted to a genuine economic turning point — irrigation water opened the door to intensive agriculture on land that had previously been dry and poorly productive.
Why visit today?
Despite its artificial origin, Utxesa has long since become a fully naturalized landscape. It's surrounded by marshland and dense vegetation that draw a wide range of ecologically valuable bird species — including species typical of steppe habitats, alongside migratory and resident waterbirds and reed-bed species. Because of this biodiversity, the authorities placed the area under protection as a Wildlife Natural Reserve, a status it has held since October 1990.
For visitors, this translates into a quiet walk or hike around the reservoir, away from the crowds of larger tourist hubs. The surroundings of Utxesa are popular among birdwatchers and hikers looking for moderate trails that trace the shoreline and cut through wetland terrain.
