About this place
U Sítovky is a small nature reserve located within the Hradec Forests, a wooded area on the outskirts of Hradec Králové in the Czech Republic. The protected site, officially known as Sítovka, has held its conservation status since 1960 and covers roughly 14.5 hectares at an elevation of 250–260 metres above sea level. It is a popular spot for local residents looking to spend time in nature without leaving the immediate vicinity of the city.
Why is this forest protected?
The reserve was established to preserve an original, mixed forest stand of a natural character. The subject of protection is a diverse, multi-layered forest community dominated by local ecotypes of Scots pine and pedunculate oak. This composition sets the site apart from the more uniform, commercially managed plantations found elsewhere in the region — here, trees of different species and ages form a layered structure that supports greater biodiversity than a typical single-species stand.
Where does the name Sítovka come from?
The name has an unusual origin tied to the forest's own history. The stand was originally much denser, but over time it was thinned out by strong westerly winds that regularly sweep through this part of the region. Seen from above, the thinned-out forest came to resemble a sieve — in Czech, "síto" — which gave rise to the name Sítovka, and in turn to the name of the reserve itself, U Sítovky.
What can visitors see on site?
In 2015, an educational trail dedicated to dead wood ("Mrtvé dřevo") was created within the reserve. The trail introduces visitors to the role that dead wood plays in a forest ecosystem — as habitat for insects and fungi, as part of the natural cycle of decomposition, and as a contributor to overall biodiversity. It offers a rare chance, so close to a major city, to observe processes that are usually removed from actively managed commercial forests.
Sítovka forms part of the wider network of Hradec Forests surrounding Hradec Králové, which also includes other protected areas along with walking and cycling trails. This makes it easy to combine a visit to U Sítovky with a longer walk through the surrounding woodland.
