Tvrz Malotice

Tvrz Malotice is a Gothic water fortress standing on the bank of a pond in the village of Malotice, in the Kolín region of central Czechia. The nearby village of Lhotky, roughly two kilometres to the southwest, belongs to the same municipality, and the small town of Zásmuky lies just a short drive away. The fortress ranks among the more notable surviving examples of medieval defensive architecture in this part of the country.

When was the fortress built?

The modest fortified residence dates back to the 14th century. Among its earliest owners were wealthy burghers from Kutná Hora, who at the time invested in nearby estates, drawn by the income potential of farmland and fish ponds. The adjoining pond served as a natural moat, a common feature for this type of small noble seat in medieval Bohemia.

Who owned the fortress over the centuries?

By the 15th century the property belonged to the Rohlík family of Malotice. The following centuries were unkind to the building: it gradually fell into disrepair, and the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War only accelerated the decline. Restoration came in the second half of the 17th century, when Adolf Vratislav of Šternberk, then owner of the Zásmuky estate, had both the fortress and the adjoining farmyard repaired and brought back into use. The Šternberk family held the estate until 1924, when it passed to the state during the first land reform. It then continued to serve as part of a larger agricultural estate, and since 1994, following the dissolution of the local farming cooperative, the whole site has stood abandoned.

What has survived from the original structure?

The most distinctive surviving element is a rectangular, two-storey residential tower topped with a wood-shingle roof. Its ground floor and upper level still display Gothic portals, a clear trace of the building's medieval origins. Around the tower, fragments of the surrounding wall that once enclosed the courtyard remain visible, although parts of it have collapsed over time. At its fullest extent, the complex included a rectangular residential building, the tower, and the fortified walls ringing the courtyard.

Can visitors enter the fortress today?

The site currently stands empty and is closed to visitors, as it lies on private land. Even so, the fortress itself — aside from the perimeter walls — has survived in reasonably good condition to this day, making it a valuable example of Gothic defensive architecture in the Kolín region. Those interested in its history can still view the tower from the road running through the village and photograph the wall and roofline reflected in the adjoining pond.
