Trondheim Science Museum
About this place
Trondheim Science Museum (Norwegian: Vitensenteret i Trondheim) is a hands-on science centre in the heart of Trondheim, Norway. It stands at Kongens gate 1, right beside the town square, Torvet, so most central sights are a short walk away.
What is Trondheim Science Museum?
This is a place where science is learned by touching and trying rather than by reading wall labels. The centre is one of ten regional science centres in Norway. Visitors find more than 150 interactive exhibits, and the models are there to be operated, tested and tinkered with, so you see physical and technical phenomena at work for yourself.
What can you see and do?
The headline attraction is the 3D planetarium and 360-degree cinema, presented by the centre as the first and only ones of their kind in Norway. A show under the dome is a good way to step away from the exhibition floor and look at space from a different angle.
Beyond the permanent exhibition, the programme includes:
- live science shows,
- kitchen chemistry sessions, where experiments are done with everyday household ingredients,
- weekend and holiday activities,
- late-night events and science festivals.
The centre also runs youth clubs, science camps and a fully equipped maker space, so it works as a local hub for technical education as well as a tourist attraction.
Who is it for?
Mainly families with children. Younger kids will find exhibits where pressing, turning and watching is enough, while older ones get puzzles that explain why something works. Adults are not left out either: many stations draw people in regardless of age, and the shows and planetarium screenings suit a group outing.
It is also a solid plan for a rainy day. Weather in Trondheim can turn quickly, and the whole exhibition is indoors.
Planning your visit
The exhibition is laid out on a single floor. A lift is reached from the courtyard entrance, which helps wheelchair users and parents with strollers. Before you go, check the centre's website for current opening hours and ticket prices, which differ between weekdays, weekends and summer holidays; the youngest children enter free.
The building also hosts a science store selling experiment kits and toys. You can walk in without a ticket to the exhibition, making it an easy stop for a souvenir.
