Torcal of Antequera Visitor Center

The Torcal de Antequera Visitor Center is the gateway to one of Europe's most striking karst landscapes, located about 15 km from Antequera in the province of Málaga, Andalusia. The center sits at the heart of El Torcal de Antequera Natural Park, itself a component of the UNESCO World Heritage Antequera Dolmens Site, alongside the dolmens themselves and the Peña de los Enamorados rock.

How do you get there?

The center stands in the Torcal Alto sector, over 1,100 meters above sea level, reached by a road climbing into the park from Antequera. Driving is by far the easiest option, and a car park is available on site. Both the natural area and the visitor center are free to enter, but it's worth arriving early in summer, when visitor numbers rise and parking space is limited.

The building houses a modern interpretation hall with interactive displays explaining how more than 150 million years of marine sediment, limestone, and relentless erosion by rain, wind, and frost carved Torcal's maze of stone "corridors" and "alleys." The exhibits also cover the park's plant and animal life and the geological processes still shaping the rocks today. Beyond the exhibition space, the center includes a multipurpose hall, a guide-service desk, an astronomical observatory, a gift shop, and a café-restaurant overlooking the rock labyrinth.

Which trails start from the center?

Several waymarked walking routes of varying difficulty begin right at the building. The green route is the shortest and easiest — a roughly 45-minute loop through the most photogenic formations of Torcal Alto, well suited to families or anyone short on time. The yellow route runs through the neighboring Torcal Bajo area; it covers gentler terrain but is just as dramatic. Both trails pass close to "El Tornillo," a screw-shaped rock pinnacle that has become the unofficial emblem of the whole park.

When should you visit?

The center is open year-round on seasonal hours: winter (November to March) 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and summer (April to October) 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Spring and autumn bring the most comfortable temperatures for walking, while in summer it pays to start the trail early before the midday heat sets in. Thanks to low light pollution, the area also draws astro-tourism visitors, and the on-site observatory runs stargazing sessions.
