About this place
Tabulová hora is a limestone peak with a striking flat top, rising above the village of Klentnice in the Pavlov Hills (Pavlovské vrchy), part of the famous Pálava region in South Moravia, Czech Republic. Also known as Stolová hora, the mountain gets its name from its summit, which looks as if it had been sliced off, leaving a broad, near-horizontal viewing platform open in every direction.
How to get there?
The natural starting point for a hike up Tabulová hora is the village of Klentnice, tucked scenically at the foot of the Pavlov Hills just a few kilometers from Mikulov. A red-marked trail leads from the village center up a short but fairly steep climb to the flat summit. The same trail continues along the entire Pálava ridge — one way toward Turold and Mikulov, the other past Sirotčí hrádek all the way to Děvín, the highest and best-known peak of the range. That makes it easy to turn Tabulová hora into part of a longer, multi-hour ridge walk with views over the whole area. By car, Klentnice or nearby Pavlov are the most convenient bases, both also served by additional hiking and cycling routes.
What will you see?
The summit itself is a limestone ridge with a distinctively truncated, table-like top — the source of both its Czech names. From the upper platform, a wide panorama opens across the Pálava region: the silhouette of Děvín, the rooftops of Klentnice and Pavlov, vineyards covering the surrounding slopes, and, on a clear day, Mikulov and the hills across the Austrian border. The ground around the summit consists of dry limestone grasslands and rocky outcrops, home to heat-loving plants and the steppe-like fauna typical of Pálava — the peak sits within a nature reserve protecting these unique habitats. The pale, almost white limestone rock contrasts sharply with the green vineyards filling the valley below in summer.
When to visit?
Spring and early summer bring the best conditions, when the dry Pálava grasslands are in fullest bloom and the air after rain is at its clearest — ideal for photographing the panorama. Autumn, especially September and October, coincides with the grape harvest in the surrounding vineyards, making a walk up Tabulová hora a natural complement to wine tasting in Pavlov or Mikulov. In summer, an early start is worthwhile, since the rocky, largely unshaded trail can get hot. Winter conditions can be slippery, but on a clear day the snow-covered ridges of Pálava offer a stark, striking view.
