Světovina

Zbiroh, Czechia

About this place

Světovina is a limestone rock formation and viewpoint right next to Zbiroh, in western Bohemia's Rokycany district. Rising to 560 metres above sea level about 2 km west of the town centre, it was formerly known as Světská skála. Today it's one of the favourite short excursions around Zbiroh, combining an easy walk, wide views, and a handful of local legends.

How do you get to Světovina?

A green-marked hiking trail leads to the rock, starting in Zbiroh and reaching the top after a walk of well under an hour. The route is easy and suitable for families with children — no climbing gear or experience is required to reach the viewpoint, even though the rock face itself is popular with climbers looking for a short training route.

What will you see there?

From the top of Světovina, the view opens onto the surrounding Křivoklátsko landscape and the valley around Zbiroh — woods, fields, and the rooftops of the nearby town. The rock formation itself is known for a flat stone that local tradition identifies as a former Slavic sacrificial altar, tied to pre-Christian ritual practices from centuries past. Nearby stands a distinctive pyramid-shaped boulder around which a local legend has grown.

What legend is tied to Světovina?

According to local lore, a Swedish military commander killed during the Thirty Years' War lies buried somewhere near the rock, beneath a stone shaped like a pyramid — from the period when Swedish troops tried to capture the nearby Zbiroh castle. The story still circulates among locals today and is a favourite detail shared by regional guides alongside the walk itself.

Who is this place for?

Světovina appeals mainly to hikers and viewpoint-chasers: the short, undemanding trail makes it an easy add-on to a visit to Zbiroh itself, for instance combined with the town's castle. The rock also serves as a reference point for climbers looking for short training routes in the Rokycany region. Compared with typical tourist lookout towers, it feels more low-key — no tower or built infrastructure, but an authentic, wilder character.

When is the best time to visit?

The clearest views from Světovina come on days with good visibility — spring and autumn, when vegetation doesn't yet (or no longer) block the panorama and temperatures are comfortable for a longer walk. In summer the trail can get warmer and busier with visitors touring Zbiroh, while in winter the ground near the rocky ledges can be slippery, so extra care is worth taking.
