About this place
Světnovské údolí is a small but strikingly scenic nature reserve located in the municipality of Světnov, in the Žďár nad Sázavou district of the Vysočina Region in the Czech Republic. Covering only around 2.6 hectares, the reserve forms part of the Žďárské vrchy Protected Landscape Area and has held official protected status since 1983.
What makes this valley worth visiting?
At the heart of the reserve flows the meandering Sklenský stream, winding through the valley at an altitude of 620–640 metres within the Pohledecko-skalská upland. Along its banks, damp meadows alternate with strips of woody vegetation, forming a mosaic of habitats typical of foothill stream valleys in central Europe.
The reserve is best known for its dense population of spring snowflake (also called summer snowflake in some regions), a protected bulbous plant species that, every spring, usually in March and April, blankets the stream banks and adjoining meadows in a thick carpet of white blossoms. This seasonal spectacle is what draws large numbers of hikers, nature photographers and botanists from across the country.
What other plants grow in the valley?
Besides the spring snowflake, Světnovské údolí is home to a range of other notable species, including the greater butterfly-orchid, dioecious knapweed (marsh knapweed), poisonous mezereon (an ornamental yet toxic shrub), pendulous rose, scaly figwort, and meadow-rue with columbine-like leaves. This botanical variety gives the small reserve considerable value for regional nature conservation, despite its modest size.
When is the best time to visit?
The ideal time to explore the valley is early spring, when the snowflakes bloom — typically toward the end of March into April, though the exact timing shifts slightly with the weather each year. During this period, the reserve becomes one of the most visited natural spots in the Vysočina Region. Outside the blooming season, the valley still rewards visitors with a peaceful walk among greenery and the gentle sound of the flowing stream, making it an appealing destination in summer and autumn as well, when the surrounding meadows and woodland take on different seasonal colours.
Where exactly is Světnovské údolí located?
The valley lies within the cadastral territory of Světnov, close to the town of Žďár nad Sázavou, in the heart of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. Its position inside the Žďárské vrchy Protected Landscape Area makes it a natural complement to the hiking trails that crisscross this popular recreational region, known for its rolling hills, forests and numerous scenic lookout points.
Frequently asked questions
Is the reserve easy to reach for visitors? The valley sits close to the village of Světnov, making it relatively accessible for anyone travelling through the Žďárské vrchy area, though as with any protected nature reserve, visitors should stick to marked paths to avoid damaging the sensitive vegetation.
Why is the spring snowflake so abundant here? The moist, fertile soils along the meandering Sklenský stream, combined with the valley's particular microclimate, create ideal growing conditions for the species, resulting in unusually dense clusters of flowers within a small area.
Is this a good destination for a family outing? Yes, the reserve's small size and gentle terrain make it suitable for most visitors, including families with children, especially during the peak spring flowering period.
