Pohořelice, Czechia

About this place

The Church of Saint James the Elder in Pohořelice is a Gothic parish church that has shaped the skyline of this South Moravian town in the Brno-venkov district for centuries. Its tower, rising more than 30 meters above the main square, makes the building visible long before visitors reach the narrow streets of the old town.

What is the history behind the church?

A Romanesque church once stood on this site, but it burned down together with the whole settlement in 1278. Reconstruction began in the Gothic style, and the oldest surviving part of today's building is the polygonal presbytery, built between 1290 and 1323. Work continued over the following centuries: by 1580 a three-aisled nave had been added, along with the distinctive tower placed asymmetrically in the western facade and topped with a pyramidal spire. In 1668, the Brno-based builder Ruprecht carried out Renaissance alterations, bricking up some of the original Gothic windows and replacing them with new semicircular ones. Today the church is listed as a protected cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

What can visitors see inside?

The church's main draw is a set of medieval frescoes dated to 1324. Visitors travel to Pohořelice specifically to see them, coming not only from across the Czech Republic but also from neighboring Austria — the paintings are regarded as one of the more valuable examples of sacred art in the region. For a long time, layers of plaster and lime hid the frescoes from view; only later restoration work uncovered them again, revealing the skill of the medieval painters who created them.

Can you climb the tower?

The church tower, over 30 meters tall, includes a viewing gallery that offers a panoramic look over the rooftops of Pohořelice and the surrounding Moravian countryside. It gives visitors an extra reason to stop here beyond the interior of the church itself.

How do you get to the church?

The church stands right in the center of Pohořelice, next to the main square, making it impossible to miss as the town's natural landmark. Pohořelice lies along the main routes connecting Brno with Mikulov and the Austrian border, which makes it a convenient stop while touring South Moravia — for instance on the way to the South Moravian Wine Trails or the nearby Věstonice reservoir.

When is the best time to visit?

Since this is an active parish church, it is best to plan a visit outside of service hours and check current opening times with the local parish beforehand. Spring and summer are especially good seasons for combining the visit with a walk through the town and, weather permitting, a climb up the tower for the view from the gallery.
