About this place
Svákov Observation Tower is a wooden lookout tower standing roughly 630 meters west of Soběslav, in the Svákov forest, on a slope above the Lužnice River. It's a favorite short-trip destination in this part of South Bohemia — free to visit, open year-round, with no fixed hours.
How do you get there?
A yellow-marked hiking trail connects the tower to Soběslav railway station, covering about 3 kilometers. The route is suitable for both walkers and cyclists, climbing gently through the Svákov forest without requiring much preparation. It works equally well as a quick out-and-back walk or as a stop on a longer cycling loop through the surrounding countryside.
What will you see?
The tower stands 13.5 meters tall and has three levels, with 45 steps leading up to the highest viewing platform at 10 meters. From there, visitors get a semicircular view eastward — over Soběslav itself, the surrounding villages, and Choustník hill. Thanks to its position on the slope above the Lužnice valley, the outlook stretches across a wide swath of the South Bohemian lowland.
One detail worth knowing before you climb: the tower sits at the edge of a Celtic hillfort dating back to the Iron Age, one of the traces of settlement in the area from more than two thousand years ago. That gives the spot a layer of history well beyond the tower itself, which was only built in 2014.
When should you visit?
Since the tower is open around the clock, all year, the best time to go depends mostly on weather and light. Clear mornings or late afternoons give the sharpest views toward Choustník and the surrounding hills, and autumn adds an extra draw as the Svákov forest turns color.
Who is this for?
It's an easy, family-friendly outing close to the center of Soběslav — free of charge and without the crowds that gather at bigger regional attractions. It also makes a natural stop on cycling routes linking Soběslav with nearby villages.
