Studenec Castle

Studenec Castle stands in the centre of the village of Studenec, in the Semily District of the Liberec Region, in the foothills of the Krkonoše Mountains in north-eastern Czechia.

Where exactly is Studenec Castle?

The building sits right in the middle of Studenec, next to the Church of St John the Baptist, on the edge of a small park. The village spreads across the slopes of Stráž, a 630-metre melaphyre hill, roughly 7 km north of Nová Paka. Its closest neighbour is Zálesní Lhota, a small village about 1.5 km to the east that belongs to the same municipality.

How far back does its history go?

Studenec is first recorded in written sources in the second half of the 14th century, when the settlement was administered from the nearby Levín Castle. A local nobleman, Zbraslav of Studenec, appears in a document from 1395. After that the trail goes cold for over a century; the estate resurfaces in the records only in the early 16th century, in the hands of the Trčka of Lípa family, who held it until 1584.

Who built the original manor?

Local tradition credits Jan Stráník, or his son, with raising the first fortified manor house (tvrz) here at the end of the 16th century. After 1688 the new owner, Karel Choryňský, had the building remodelled in the Baroque style.

What gave the castle its current look?

The building took on the appearance visitors see today during a major rebuilding in 1883, when the older manor was enlarged and refashioned in the Neo-Renaissance style.

What happened to the castle in more recent times?

In the 1990s the castle was converted into a hotel. That venture no longer operates, and the building currently stands empty and closed to visitors - it can only be viewed from the outside, from the park or the village road.
