About this place
Stromovka is the largest and most significant park in Humpolec, a town in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. Covering roughly 19,400 square meters, it borders the town's historic core and forms the main green corridor through the center.
What is the history behind the park?
The site once held a pond that was gradually filled in. The land was later built over, then cleared again, and during the 20th century it became a public green space known as Stromovka. By the turn of the millennium the park had fallen into disrepair — leftover socialist-era plantings, poor upkeep, and dense, impenetrable greenery had turned it into a neglected corner of town rather than a proper civic space.
Why was the park redesigned?
In 2014 the town of Humpolec launched an architectural competition for the park's renewal. The goal was to build an urban garden that kept as much greenery as possible while opening the space to daylight and making it clearer and safer to move through. The redesign added a large gathering lawn next to a central pavilion. The result was well received: in 2021 Stromovka won the Park of the Year award.
What is there to do in the park today?
The centerpiece is an unusual playground measuring 21 by 15 meters, built from polyhedral, cocoon-like structures linked by rope tunnels and steel footbridges, along with a slide, net climbs, and hanging rope nests. The park also has a café and a memorial plaque dedicated to a figure known locally as Hliník. Dogs are limited to a designated area rather than allowed throughout the park.
When is the best time to visit?
Stromovka is active year-round. Cultural events run from spring through autumn — more than 80 took place in 2022 alone — while winter brings a seasonal outdoor ice rink. The large central lawn makes the park a natural spot for picnics and downtime during the warmer months.
