About this place
Strání Chateau stands in the village of Strání, part of a municipality that sits right on the Czech-Slovak border in the Uherské Hradiště district, close to Květná. It's a modest but historically interesting Renaissance residence, today run as a hotel, set against the hills of the White Carpathians.
Where does the building come from?
A manor house already stood on this spot around 1592. After 1650, the Liechtenstein family, who had taken over the Strání estate in 1625, rebuilt it in Renaissance style as a hunting lodge. Gundakar of Liechtenstein, the owner at the time, gave the building much of the shape it still has today. The Liechtensteins kept managing the Strání estate all the way until 1945, making the chateau one of the more lasting traces of their presence in Moravia.
The building is now listed as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Since 2003 it has gone through extensive reconstruction that converted the former residence into a hotel with conference and dining facilities — that's its main function today.
What should you know about the surroundings?
Strání lies about 25 km southeast of Uherské Hradiště, literally on the Czech-Slovak border, in the White Carpathians — a range known for gentle, wooded hills, orchards, and a long tradition of pastoral farming. The municipality of Strání is made up of two parts: Strání itself and neighboring Květná, which had around 1,104 residents according to the 2021 census.
For decades Květná was known regionally for glassmaking — a glassworks operated here (known among other things as Květná 1794) that closed down in 2023. It's a meaningful part of local identity and a good talking point if you're planning a longer stay near the chateau.
How do you get there?
Driving is the most convenient option — the trip from Uherské Hradiště takes around half an hour, through the scenic terrain of the White Carpathians. The area is also well positioned for travelers coming from Slovakia, since the border runs right alongside the village. Hikers and cyclists will find trails crossing the border hills, with views over valleys on both sides.
What can you see nearby?
The chateau itself, being a working hotel, is best experienced as a guest staying overnight or using its restaurant — it isn't a museum-style site with regular visiting hours for the general public. It's worth using a stay here as a base for hiking in the White Carpathians, a UNESCO biosphere reserve known for its biodiverse meadows and traditional fruit orchards.
When is the best time to visit?
The White Carpathians region is at its best in spring and summer, when the meadows are in bloom, and in early autumn during the fruit harvest, when the surrounding orchards are especially colorful. Winter is quieter for tourism but suits a low-key stay in the chateau's hotel wing.
