Statue of Saint Barbara
The Statue of Saint Barbara is an early Baroque limestone sculpture standing today on Komenský Square in the historic centre of Kutná Hora, a town inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for the wealth its silver mines once brought. The figure depicts Saint Barbara, patron saint of miners — a fitting subject for a town whose entire prosperity for centuries rested on silver extraction.
When was the statue made?
The front of the pedestal bears the inscription "SUBTILO PRAESIDIO 1680," dating the statue's creation to 1680. It originally stood elsewhere in the town, near the former Jesuit college, and only reached its current location after nearly two centuries in that other spot.
What does the statue look like?
The figure shows the saint at life-size, in a gently curved, contrapposto stance typical of Baroque figural sculpture. She wears a richly draped robe falling in numerous folds, and an iron gilt crown rests on her head, marking her status as a holy martyr. In her right hand she holds a chalice, one of the traditional attributes associated with her cult. Her left hand rests on a small model of a square tower topped with a pyramidal roof — a miniature structure with a semi-circular entrance and small window openings, rising from the base of the pedestal. The composition is completed by a gilt palm frond placed near her left hand, beside the tower — a traditional symbol of martyrdom found in depictions of saints who died for their faith.
Why Saint Barbara in Kutná Hora?
The choice of patron is no coincidence. Saint Barbara has long been venerated as the protector of miners, metalworkers, and all trades connected with work underground, fire, and explosives. In a town whose entire history, architecture, and wealth grew out of silver ore extraction, devotion to this saint formed a natural part of the local mining community's identity. It is to her that Kutná Hora's most famous landmark is dedicated as well — the town's monumental Gothic church in the historic centre.
How did the statue reach Komenský Square?
The statue's present location on Komenský Square is the result of its relocation in 2010, after close to two centuries spent at a different site in the town, near the former Jesuit college. The return of the figure of Saint Barbara to the centre of Kutná Hora coincided with a thorough reconstruction of the square — renewed street paving and sidewalks gave the space around the monument a new, picturesque character, turning it into one of the recognisable spots of the historic town centre.
