What is the history behind the village?

The area around Stará Oleška has been settled for nearly 5,000 years, and permanent settlement along old trade routes can be documented from before the year 1000. An old salt route once passed through the village, which encouraged the construction of a fortified manor here. By the early 14th century, Stará Oleška was already recorded as a village, and the first written mention of it dates to 1380. For most of its history — right up until the end of World War II — the population was predominantly German colonists. According to the 1930 census, the village had 324 residents, only four of whom identified as Czechoslovak. A number of houses with valuable folk architecture survive in the village today, standing as evidence of this long settlement history.

How many people live in Stará Oleška today?

Stará Oleška remains a small settlement: according to 2011 data, 208 people lived there permanently. This scale is typical for villages in the region, where the population dropped considerably compared to the pre-war period following the departure of the German-speaking population after the war.

What is the Stará Oleška nature reserve?

On the southern edge of the village lies a nature reserve of the same name, Stará Oleška. It covers the western part of the Olešský pond along with its adjoining banks and spans 11 hectares. The area was placed under protection in 1995 due to its natural value, fitting into the broader context of the surrounding Labské pískovce Protected Landscape Area.
