About this place
Slovácké divadlo is a professional theatre in Uherské Hradiště, a town at the heart of the Slovácko region in eastern Czechia. Founded in 1945, right after the war ended, it was the first professional theatre stage in the region, and from its earliest days it built its repertoire around local themes, folklore and the traditions of Slovácko. Its opening production, "Její pastorkyňa" by Gabriela Preissová, was staged in the very year the theatre was founded.
How did the theatre get its start?
Until 1949, Slovácké divadlo operated as a cooperative stage, run by the Association of Slovácko Theatre. This model followed the example of other regional Czech theatres of the era, such as Horácké divadlo and Beskydské divadlo, where local communities organized the financing and artistic direction of their own stage before the state eventually took over.
Where does the theatre perform today?
In 1956 the theatre was given the former Sokol building in Uherské Hradiště, and its main stage has been housed there ever since. More than two decades later, in 1978, a Small Stage joined the ensemble, expanding the repertoire toward more intimate and experimental formats.
What does Slovácké divadlo stage today?
Today Slovácké divadlo ranks among the most respected theatres in Czechia. It has won numerous awards, including Thalia Awards, prizes from Sazka and Divadelní noviny, an award from Czech Television, and several festival honors. For decades the theatre has consistently emphasized its regional identity, drawing on the folklore, customs and history of Slovácko while maintaining a high artistic standard across both classic and contemporary repertoire.
Why is Slovácké divadlo worth a visit?
For a visitor to Uherské Hradiště, the theatre is more than a venue for an evening performance — it's a living piece of the region's history, with more than eighty years of tradition rooted in local culture from the very start. The former Sokol building that has housed the theatre since 1956 is itself part of the town's architectural heritage.
