About this place
Slavkovické louky is a small but botanically remarkable nature reserve near the village of Černá v Pošumaví, in the Český Krumlov district of South Bohemia, Czech Republic. The protected area stretches through the valley of the Černá stream, at an elevation of roughly 749 to 774 metres above sea level, and covers a mosaic of spring-fed and wet meadows bordered by forest growing on a varied bedrock of crystalline rock.
Why was the area protected?
The reserve was declared in 1992 to safeguard valuable and threatened meadow communities — both spring meadows and damp valley-bottom meadows — together with forest vegetation growing on outcrops of crystalline limestone. This combination of waterlogged habitats sitting on lime-rich bedrock is what makes the site's flora considerably richer than the typically acidic forests found across much of the Šumava region.
What is there to see?
The meadows of Slavkovické louky support a number of plant species that are rare regionally, and in some cases nationally. Among those recorded here are cirsium (a thistle with notably variable leaves), monkshood, marsh helleborine, grass-of-Parnassus, marsh ragwort, broad-leaved marsh orchids, and more than a dozen sedge species. The presence of orchids and other lime-loving plants is a direct result of the crystalline limestone outcrops in the bedrock — an unusual feature in a region otherwise dominated by granite and gneiss.
The damp meadows along the stream valley also provide habitat for insects and amphibians associated with wetland conditions, although the site's main conservation value lies in its vascular plant flora. The surrounding forest, growing on the same varied rocky substrate, completes the habitat mosaic and acts as a natural buffer that helps keep the meadows from drying out.
Where exactly is the reserve located?
Slavkovické louky lies northeast of the settlement of Plánička, within the cadastral territory of Černá v Pošumaví, not far from the Lipno dam and the border with Upper Austria. The surrounding landscape belongs to the Šumava region, known for its forested hills, lakes, and extensive wetlands, and popular with hikers and cyclists.
How can visitors explore it?
The reserve itself is small, so it is best visited as part of a longer walk or bike ride through the countryside around Černá v Pošumaví, for example along a route following the Černá stream valley. As a protected area, it should only be explored on marked paths, and picking plants is prohibited — several of the species found here are under strict legal protection.
The best time to visit is late spring and summer, when the meadows are in full bloom and the chances of spotting rare orchids and other protected plants are highest.
