About this place
Slabce
Slabce is a small municipality in the Rakovník District of the Central Bohemian Region, home to roughly 700 people. At first glance it looks like just another quiet village along the road, but it hides one of the region's lesser-known château complexes — reason enough to slow down rather than drive straight through.
What is there to see in Slabce?
The village revolves around its château, whose story starts in the Middle Ages. A Gothic fortress originally stood on the site, built in the first half of the 16th century by Burian of Vahaneč. In the early 17th century the estate passed to the Vančura family of Řehnice, who set out to turn the plain stronghold into a Baroque residence. The project dragged on for decades: the man who commissioned it died before seeing it finished, and money troubles meant his heirs needed another two decades to complete the work. The château's current Empire-style appearance dates from a 19th-century remodeling ordered by a later owner, after which the estate passed to the aristocratic Croy von Dülmen family, who held it until 1945.
The building has never been left to decay. Today it houses the local municipal office, a library, and a health centre — a rare case of a former noble residence still serving the community rather than sitting empty as a museum piece. Since the mid-1960s it has been listed as a protected cultural monument, which keeps its historic fabric safe from careless alterations.
Why does Slabce have such a long settlement history?
The area has been inhabited for an unusually long time — written references to the place go back to the early 11th century. The settlement grew up along an old trade route linking Regensburg with Prague, close to the royal stronghold of Týřov, and that position on a well-used route helped it develop while much of the surrounding countryside was still forest. During the medieval period part of the village belonged to fiefs subordinate to Křivoklát Castle, and a manor farm once stood here — destroyed during the Hussite Wars.
How do you get there, and what should you know before visiting?
Slabce sits within easy reach of the main routes through the Rakovník District, making it a workable stop on a day trip from nearby towns. Because the château now serves administrative and community functions, checking ahead for open days or scheduled tours is worthwhile — regular sightseeing hours are limited.
