About this place
Sint-Michielskasteel is a neoclassical castle in the Elzestraat district of the Belgian municipality of Sint-Katelijne-Waver, right next to Sint-Michielspark. Built in 1784–1785 at the initiative of magistrate Henri De Villers, it remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in this part of the municipality.
What does the castle's architecture look like?
Sint-Michielskasteel represents the neoclassical style typical of the late 18th century — a symmetrical layout, a calm, elegant facade, and clear references to classical architectural models. Together with the surrounding park grounds, the building forms a coherent ensemble that is now protected as a listed village landscape (beschermd dorpsgezicht).
Who owned the castle over the years?
The ownership history of Sint-Michielskasteel mirrors the fate of many similar residences in the Antwerp region. From 1848 the castle belonged to Joseph d'Artevelde, in 1858 it passed to colonel Jan Frans Reuter-Plunkett, and in 1877 it was acquired by Baron Van Reynegom de Buzet. Each successive owner left a mark on the estate's history, though the building itself retained its original 18th-century character throughout.
What happened to the castle in the 20th century?
In 1970 ownership of Sint-Michielskasteel passed to the municipality of Sint-Katelijne-Waver, opening a new chapter for the building. As late as 1997 it was still being used as ordinary office space, but over time it fell into disrepair and required substantial intervention.
What does the castle look like after renovation?
Between 2017 and 2019 the building underwent a comprehensive renovation, funded with more than 2.7 million euros in public subsidies. The works restored the castle's former grandeur while giving it a new function — today Sint-Michielskasteel houses a restaurant with meeting rooms, combining historical value with modern use of the space.
Why is Sint-Michielskasteel worth visiting?
The castle is an interesting example of how a historic building can gain a second life without losing its character. Its location next to Sint-Michielspark means a walk through the area combines greenery with the sight of a carefully restored neoclassical residence. It is also a good starting point for anyone interested in the history of local noble families and the architectural changes the region has undergone over the past two and a half centuries.
