About this place
Semenec is a concrete observation tower standing on a hill just west of Týn nad Vltavou, in the České Budějovice District. Perched at 439 meters above sea level, it is one of the smallest lookout towers in the Czech Republic — only 7 meters tall, with the viewing platform sitting at just 4 meters. Despite its modest size, it's a favorite short-trip destination for locals and visitors wanting a quick view over the Vltava valley.
How do you get to Semenec?
A red-marked hiking trail leads to the tower straight from Týn nad Vltavou, covering roughly 1 kilometer — an easy walk of about 20–30 minutes, manageable even with young children. The trail forms part of the longer Semenec Nature Trail, stretching almost 5.9 kilometers through the forest and lined with educational panels. The starting point is Alej Míru (Avenue of Peace), a tree-lined path planted in 1881 in honor of Belgian Princess Stephanie, on the occasion of her marriage to Archduke Rudolf of Austria.
What can you see from the tower?
Despite its low height, the platform offers views over the bends of the Vltava River, the surrounding hills of the Šumava foothills, and the distinctive silhouette of the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant on the horizon. This combination of easy access from town and an open panorama makes Semenec a popular spot around sunset.
What's the history behind it?
In the 1920s, a wooden pavilion stood on the hill, relocated here after the First Regional Agricultural and Trade Exhibition held in Týn nad Vltavou from September 2 to 9, 1922. In the 1930s, the wooden structure was replaced with a durable concrete tower, which has survived to this day in nearly unchanged form. Not far from the tower, in a spot still known locally as "Na Spravedlnosti" ("At Justice"), the town gallows once stood — the name has survived as a historical curiosity, even though no trace of the execution site remains.
What else is there to see nearby?
Right next to the tower is the Semenec Natural History Museum, holding natural science collections combined with educational and game elements for children — a good addition to the trip, especially for families. The whole Semenec hill functions as a local park and recreation area for the residents of Týn nad Vltavou, with benches and rest spots along the educational trail.
