Semaforo di Monte Grosso

Semaforo di Monte Grosso is a former Royal Navy semaphore station and lookout post standing on the summit of Monte Grosso (344 m), above Cavo on the northeastern tip of Elba.

What is this place?

The station was built to watch over maritime traffic in the channel between the Ligurian Sea and the Piombino Channel, with clear sightlines over both the eastern and northern coasts of the island. The building already appears in the Leopoldine land registry of 1842, and its original facade was painted in a distinctive black-and-white checkerboard pattern. From 1917 it also housed a meteorological observatory.

Through the interwar years and the Second World War the semaforo served a military role: in 1938 it was fitted with an anti-aircraft Colt 1915 machine gun position, and by 1942 it was fully armed and operational, with telegraph and telephone links working at full efficiency and optical signalling at around 80%. A fuel depot and quarters for naval personnel stood nearby.

The navy abandoned the post after 1960, and the building sat empty for decades. Restoration began in 2018 and was completed in 2022; the structure is now a privately owned residence with an infinity pool and a panoramic sauna. The building itself is private property and cannot be visited inside, but the viewpoint at the summit and the surrounding trails remain open and free to walk.

How do you get there?

The semaforo sits roughly 5 km from Cavo and marks the first major landmark on the Grande Traversata Elbana (GTE), the long-distance trail that crosses the whole island. The walk starts in Cavo, Elba's northernmost village, and climbs through pine woods along a dirt track and footpaths to the summit. The ascent is moderate and short enough to make a satisfying half-day outing on its own, while also forming the opening stretch of the longer GTE stage toward Porto Azzurro (18.5 km, about 496 m of total elevation gain), which continues through Valle delle Fiche and over Monte Strega (427 m) and Cima del Monte (502 m).

What will you see?

The terrace by the semaforo offers one of the best panoramic views on this side of Elba. Looking east you see the village of Cavo, the three small islands of Topi, Palmaiola and Cerboli, and, beyond the Piombino Channel, the outline of the Italian mainland coast. To the west, the entire northern coastline of Elba unfolds. The spot is especially rewarding at sunset and on clear, still days, when visibility stretches far across the channel.

When should you go?

Spring and autumn bring the most comfortable temperatures and the greenest Mediterranean scrubland along the trail. In summer, start early to avoid the midday heat and bring your own water, since there are no springs or refreshment points along the route.
