Scogliu Longu Lighthouse

Scogliu Longu Lighthouse stands at the end of the Quai l'Herminier jetty in Propriano, on Corsica's southwestern coast, right at the entrance to the Gulf of Valinco. It's one of the town's landmarks — a white, cylindrical tower visible from the harbour promenade and from the decks of yachts sailing into the marina.

What is this place?

The lighthouse was built in 1878 and has been guiding ships into the port of Propriano ever since. It stands about 17 metres tall and follows the simple, unadorned round-tower shape typical of 19th-century French harbour lighthouses. Its light alternates between white and green sectors, flashing three eclipses every 12 seconds, which lets sailors tell the safe entry channel apart from the coastal rocks.

The lighthouse sits on a small headland called Scoglio Longo (roughly "long rock" in Corsican), a spot that has been inhabited since antiquity. Traces of Greek and Roman tombs and structures survive in the area, showing that the Gulf of Valinco has been settled and used as a harbour for thousands of years.

How do you get there?

The lighthouse sits right in the middle of Propriano — just walk along the seafront Quai l'Herminier, where yachts and fishing boats moor. From the town centre it's a 10–15 minute stroll at most. Propriano lies on the N196 road connecting Ajaccio with Sartène and Bonifacio, and in summer the town is also reached by ferries from mainland France and Sardinia, so the lighthouse is easy to fit into a visit whether you arrive by car or by boat.

The lighthouse itself isn't open for visits inside, but it works as a viewpoint in its own right. From the jetty you get a full view of the Gulf of Valinco, framed by maquis-covered hills with Corsica's mountains in the background. It's also worth continuing along the quay, where cafés and restaurants overlook the lighthouse and the marina.

The best time to come is late afternoon and evening, when the sun drops behind the hills across the bay and the lighthouse starts flashing against a pink-tinged sky. In summer Propriano gets busy — it's a popular yachting harbour and a departure point for boat trips around the Gulf of Valinco and toward Bonifacio — so if you're after a quieter visit, aim for early morning or the shoulder months of May, June, or September.
