Salingburg

Franciszkowe Łaźnie, Czechia

About this place

Salingburg is a small observation tower in Františkovy Lázně (Franzensbad), a spa town in the Cheb district of the Karlovy Vary Region in the western Czech Republic, built in a romantic pseudo-Gothic style that makes it look like the ruins of a medieval castle.

Where is the tower and how do you get there?

The tower stands on a small hill called Na Vyhlídce in Slatina, a local part of Františkovy Lázně, at an elevation of roughly 450 metres above sea level. The easiest way to reach it is by car, parking near the Pyramida Hotel in Slatina and walking the short remaining distance uphill. The nearest railway station, Františkovy Lázně, is about 2 km away, so the tower is also reachable on foot or by bike from the town centre.

What is the history behind Salingburg?

The tower was built in 1906 to mark the 500th anniversary of the first written mention of the area's mineral springs. Construction was initiated by the Františkovy Lázně town council together with the local town beautification society, which was responsible for developing tourist infrastructure in the spa town at the time. The design came from Gustav Wiedermann, a local architect and builder based in Františkovy Lázně, and the tower was ceremonially opened on 7 September 1906.

What will you see there?

Salingburg has an unusual, fairy-tale-like appearance that resembles a fragment of a ruined castle's fortified walls — a resemblance that earned it the local nickname "Podivná rozhledna," or "the strange lookout tower." The structure consists of two towers: the larger one holds a viewing platform open to visitors, while the smaller one contains a small fountain. It's worth knowing in advance that the view from the top is fairly limited, since the tower isn't very tall and the surrounding trees partly block the panorama. Even so, the building's architecture and its romantic, pseudo-Gothic character make it a worthwhile stop on a walk through Slatina.

When should you visit, and how much does it cost?

The tower is open year-round and free to enter. It makes a good short stop on a longer walk around Františkovy Lázně, especially combined with exploring the spa town itself and its park promenades.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an entrance fee for Salingburg? No, entry is free and the tower can be visited all year round.

What's the best way to get there? By car is easiest — park in Slatina near the Pyramida Hotel and walk the short remaining stretch uphill. Travelling by train means a roughly 2 km walk from Františkovy Lázně station.

Why is it called "Podivná rozhledna"? Because of its unusual, fairy-tale shape resembling the ruins of a medieval castle — a nickname locals gave it long ago.

Does the tower offer wide views? Not really — it isn't very tall, and the surrounding trees partly obstruct the panorama, so the view is more limited than at other lookout towers in the region.
